Sex for Mark is as old as the history of education in Nigeria but at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Dr Chigozie Jude Odum, a lecturer, has taken the abnormal practice to another level.
Early in the week, reports from various platforms, both online and offline, revealed how, Odum, a Senior lecturer in Department of Archeology and Tourism, succeeded in impregnating four female students within four years.
The sex lecturer ‘achievement’ which could be likened to the escapades of the sex-mad rake ‘Dauda the Sexy Guy’ of the rested Lolly magazine fame, who could sleep with anything in a skirt anytime, anywhere, anyhow, has been described as unrivalled by any Nigerian lecturer in recent time. The un-apologetically pornographic Lolly magazine stole onto the newsstands way back in 1982 but it appears to have been put into practice in Enugu.
However, tertiary institutions in Nigeria have been bedeviled with obscene report of lecturers sexually abusing students, indecent dressing by students, secret cult activities and drug abuse to mention a few. Though under reported, the most common vice in the recent time is sexual relationship between female students and lecturers.
Two years ago, a respected lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Prof. Richard Akindele, was jailed for proposing five rounds of sex to a Postgraduate student, Monica Osagie.
In what looked like a scene from a Nollywood film, Akindele was heard in an audio which went viral online, demanding five rounds of sex from Osagie to award Monica a pass mark in a course she failed. Before the scandal, Akindele was also a clergyman at the Anglican Diocese of Ife where she served as a member of the church’s marriage committee.
In a related development, a University of Lagos lecturer was last year exposed by BBC Africa Eye after he was caught red-handed propositioning a student (an undercover reporter) for sex to make her secure admission. Unfortunately, Dr Boniface Igbeneghu, the lecturer at the Faculty of Arts in UNILAG, who was exposed, was also the head pastor of the local Foursquare Gospel Church.
BBC Africa Eye sent undercover journalists posing as students inside the University of Lagos and the University of Ghana. Nigerian reporter, Kiki Mordi went undercover to UNILAG and succeeded in uncovering the sexual harassment that goes on in the institution. The investigation resulted in the Unilag lecturer being exposed after he was caught in the act, and the issue trended well on Twitter and other platforms.
According to BBC Africa Eye, their investigation saw female reporters "sexually harassed, propositioned and put under pressure by senior lecturers at the institutions – all the while wearing secret cameras."
Today, Dr. Odum of UNN seems to have made previous activities in this regard mere child plays considering the feat recorded. According to reports, the senior lecturer hasn’t only asked for sex or slept with students but have succeeded in impregnating four students in row. The news recently surfaced on social media sphere how he was suspended after being arrested following the allegation that he impregnated one Onah Chinyere through intimidation and threatening.
According to UNN’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Okun Omeaku, further sanctions may be made against the lecturer after investigations.
On allegations that the said lecturer had impregnated three other students before now, he stated that “if they come up and say so, we will deal with it. But at the moment, we are battling with the case at hand.
Looking at his profile, Chigozie Jude Odum was a senior Lecturer in Department of Archaeology and Tourism, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Chigozie Jude Odum's research interest includes the following: Tourism, Geographic Information System, Conservation, Ethnographic, Ecotourism, and Sustainable Development etc.
According to report, he has carried out many academic researches and before his arrest; he is on his doctorate research.
As at the time of filing the update, the identities of the other three female students have not been made public.
AbujaCityJournal gathered that following a petition from the family lawyer of the female student, men of the Crack Squad, Enugu State Police Command picked the lecturer up in Nsukka from where he was moved to Enugu.
According to the petition, “It is our client’s instruction that she has been a student in the Archeology and Tourism Department, Faculty of Arts, University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
“According to her instructions, Dr. Odum Chigozie Jude is one of the lecturers in the said department.
“Our brief further showed that the said Dr. Odum Jude went and approached our client and demanded to be sleeping with her and threatened our client that if she refuses, she will never graduate from the said department.
“He further threatened her that he was a cultist while in school and that up till today he still has a good number of them under his payroll. He, therefore, warned our client to comply with his demands and requests in her own interest.
“Our information further showed that he called our client to his house and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her,” the petition signed by Barr. F. C. Ugwuama read.
Sexual harassment is complex, not always unidirectional, played down by all concerned, unreported and considered a serious moral and social problem in tertiary institutions.
According to ACJ further findings, the practice also involves non-teaching staff in the Examination and Record section of many institutions that lure students into sex on the promise of falsifying their results.
