Emilia Clarke has thrown her hat into the ring to become the next James Bond, admitting it would be the ‘coolest’ thing ever to join the iconic franchise. The Game of Thrones actress says she would love to play the legendary British spy and there’s certainly a vacancy right now, with Daniel Craig set to depart the role after 13 years.
Weighing in on the possibility of stepping into Bond’s famous tuxedo, Emilia told Empire magazine: ‘Yeah! Of course! Hell to the yeah! James Bond is one of those franchises where it’s never not cool. ‘You could literally make the naffest James Bond in the world and it would still be cool.’ She’s not wrong there.
The idea of an actress playing 007 for the first time has been a controversial one.
Black British actress Lashana Lynch is widely rumoured to be taking over as Bond in the next installment, No Time To Die, but the news has been met with a divisive response.
While some fans are applauding the diversity, others believe Bond should continue to be a straight white male.
Joanna Lumley told Metro.co.uk earlier this year: ‘He took very special pains to describe James Bond, who was a man, and this was written in the early 50s, who was a British man of a certain height and build and a rather cruel face, a lean build.
‘It seems odd to me you’d make that a woman.’
The Ab Fab star continued: ‘By all means write another character who works for MI6, write a new one but don’t tag onto this lazy business of pretending it’s James Bond.
‘Make a different one. It would have to be 008 or somebody else, and make it a woman if you have to. Remember James Bond is a character written by a real writer. You wouldn’t make Mr Pickwick into a 23-year-old girl…
’ Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who has co-written No Time To Die, has insisted she hasn’t made the storyline a feminist one.
Emilia, 33, will next star in Last Christmas, a festive-rom inspired by the music of George Michael, alongside Henry Golding.
James Bond: No Time To Die hits UK cinemas on 2 April 2020.
Last Christmas is out on 15 November.
